Yogi Adityanath: News

Yogi Adityanath is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, five-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP), and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh as of 2021. He is a Hindu monk of the Nath Sampradaya and Mahant (head priest) of the Gorakhnath Math. Adityanath was born as Ajay Singh Bisht in the present-day Uttarakhand, then a part of Uttar Pradesh, and completed his BSc in Mathematics from the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. At a young age, he renounced his home and adopted monkhood under his guru, Mahant Avaidyanath of the Gorakhnath Math. Adityanath subsequently succeeded the latter as the Math’s chief priest. In 1998, Adityanath became the Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur constituency and was re-elected successively in the 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014 General Elections. He emerged as a young leader in his own right and was one of the BJP’s prominent campaigners for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. After BJP’s landslide victory in the Assembly elections, Adityanath was appointed as the state’s Chief Minister.
